Besleria melancholica is a shrub endemic to Maciço da Tijuca and Serra dos Órgãos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). It occurs in lowland moist tropical forests, including secondary forests, e.g., at 50-100 m asl. The stem is subwoody and branched. The leaves are elliptic and opposite, pubescent or glabrous; the margins are entire. The inflorescence is axillary, pedicellate; the corolla is ventricose. The plants from Reserva Ecologica de Guapiaçu (see below) have fleshy calyces, and may represent a new variety.
